The Great Barrier Reef is in danger, so let's classify it so.
The issue
The Great Barrier Reef is under serious threat due to climate change. With half its coral lost to bleaching, the United Nations recently recommended that Australia should classify the world heritage site as endangered. Doing this will alert all Australians about the reef's dire state, and force its citizens and government to take drastic action to protect the reef.
This request was bitterly rejected by Sussan Ley, our environment minister, who told UN officials that this step would not be taken. Ley's response has already been met with friction from members of both the Greens and Labor party. This is not the first time that this idea has been put forward to the Australian government, but it should be the last. If the government rejects to list the Great Barrier Reef as endangered, and continues to not meet water quality targets or global emission goals, then the ocean will continue to warm and bleach all life along the Queensland coast. We are at a very lucky stage where the Reef can be rebuilt, but to do so will need drastic action. Sign this petition to show that you do not agree with the government's decision to reject the UN's warning and show your support for the longevity of the Reef, which all Australian citizens truly want.
