Suspend Injustice, Not Students: Stop the Mass Suspension of Cal Poly Humboldt Students

The Issue

On Tuesday, April 23rd, Cal Poly Humboldt  students protesting horrific human rights violations in Palestine gathered on campus to exercise their right to peacefully assemble and speak against injustice. The University administration and law enforcement met this peaceful demonstration with hostility and force, closing the campus to all students and staff and calling in SWAT and police in full riot gear within hours. This was a drastic overreaction to a peaceful student protest that posed no threat to campus activities, particularly when a search and rescue helicopter in progress was diverted to intimidate student protestors. This poor leadership and escalation of force has resulted in the full closure of campus through the end of the semester, which has created a hardship for students and staff campus wide, disrupting coursework, research, and community events for the population. Even worse, the university is now suspending students for peacefully protesting. Many of these students are in their last semester, preparing to graduate, are actively involved in research and other projects on campus, and are excellent students and citizens. As Cal Poly students, graduate students, faculty, alum, and employees, we are appalled at the actions the university is taking to punish these students for peacefully assembling and protesting violence in Palestine. We demand that the university cease and desist from their threats to suspend students for peaceful protesting.

When this petition reaches 500 signatures it will be sent to the Dean, President Jackson, and University Board of Directors.
