Suspend Classes at Manhattan College Following Unresolved Firearm Incident

The Issue

We, the students of Manhattan College, are deeply concerned about our safety and mental health following a reported firearm incident on campus which led to a "lockdown". The alleged firearm was not located, leaving us feeling vulnerable and at risk. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, such incidents can lead to acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder in students (NIMH). Furthermore, the American Psychological Association states that exposure to violence can negatively impact academic performance (APA). Given these potential impacts on our wellbeing and education, we urge the administration of Manhattan College to suspend classes tomorrow. This will allow for further investigation into the incident and provide students with time to process this traumatic event. Please sign this petition if you believe in prioritizing student safety and mental health over routine operations.
