Say NO to Silvermere Haven equine and veterinary waste incinerator in Surrey green belt

The Issue

The Multinational CVS group is pursuing its application to build a new industrial scale equine, pet and veterinary waste incineration facility next to Silvermere Golf Course (Cobham Surrey) on Green Belt Land. They plan to operate incineration  24 hours per day six days per week and have indicated that if approved they would burn a minimum of 1015 tons of animals and vet waste annually at the site.

CVS application is based on driving more profit from a business that they acquired in 2014. The plan is to create a regional hub for the incineration of dead pets, horse carcasses and veterinary waste, collected from across the South East of England and transported to Silvermere Haven.

This would be on an industrial scale and very different from the previous family run Silvermere Haven pet crematorium. This large scale development has already been rejected by Elmbridge Council in 2022 as “inappropriate development in the green belt” and has received several hundred objection letters from local residents and local Councillors.

Aside from being inappropriate development in the Green Belt, there is local concern about the impact on air quality. Incineration releases a variety of harmful pollutants into the air, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particle matter, all of which have been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Given the close proximity, less than 120m from residential housing and the silvermere Golf Course, these pollutants could have a significant impact on the health and welfare of both residents and visitors.

However Surrey County Council Planning Committee have yet to consider the proposal. As the deciding authority in this matter it is critical that they understand the impact that this development would have on both local residents and visitors enjoying the two adjacent golf courses.

CVS are seeking to exploit the animal crematoria sector for commercial gain, by adding capacity at the site to burn significant volumes of veterinary waste and scaling up to handle horses. See our Say No to Silvermere Haven video https://youtu.be/3IB26GGQwMc

Make your voice heard by adding your support and say NO to Silvermere equine and waste incinerators and YES to protecting both green belt and air quality.
