Supporting the Preservation of the Altamont

The Issue

If you live or visit Fayetteville, WV then I am sure you have seen the Altamont Hotel sitting abandoned on Fayette Ave. As a local in a booming tourist town it pains me to see the overgrown lawn, the rotting porch and the dangerous, unmanaged trees. And above all this particular house sits on a prominent lot in our downtown area.

My plan is to nominate the Altamont Hotel to be selected for the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia's Endangered Site List. It is critical that we show our community interest now before this historic building is too far gone and must be demolished. There is too much history at risk of being lost.

A thumbnail sketch of its history is as follows: The Altamont was built for Judge Henry Brazie in 1897, by local builder R. H. Dickinson (who also built the Morris Harvey Inn). In the early 20th century Henry Ford attempted to buy the hotel but was denied. Subsequently this hotel was owned and operated by four generations of Mr. Brazie's female descendants as a hotel and museum.

What I am asking for in this petition is support from the community to show that this building is important and its history is too essential to lose. Please sign if you live here or have visited our beautiful town.
