Supporting the Moroccan Embassy in the UK to establish a Consulate General in Manchester

Supporting the Moroccan Embassy in the UK to establish a Consulate General in Manchester
The Issue
Dear Honourable Consul General of Morocco,
Assalamu Alaykum,
We are writing to kindly request the Government of Morocco to establish a Consulate General Office in Manchester or another major northern city in the UK.
As Your Excellency is aware, the population of people of Moroccan origin based in the UK continues to increase, with the trend forecasted to accelerate partially driven by second and third-generation marriages. Naturally, this growth brings with it an increased demand for consular services such as registering births, marriages, deaths, and nationality requests.
To provide additional context on this, below are some widely available statistics:
- According to the 2001 census, there were 12,348 Moroccan-born individuals residing in the UK.
- In 2015, The Office for National Statistics estimated the Moroccan-born population to be 34,000.
- In 2009, estimates suggested a population of between 65,000 and 70,000 people of Moroccan origin.
Cities with substantial Moroccan populations include London, Greater Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Glasgow, Bradford, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Leicester, York, Huddersfield, Slough, St Albans, Crawley, and Trowbridge.
As Your Excellency can see from the list, a significant portion of these cities are located in the northern regions of the United Kingdom. Establishing a Moroccan Consulate in the north is therefore crucial and would greatly benefit the Moroccan community in these areas.
As Your Excellency can appreciate, many families encounter difficult challenges when traveling to London to visit the Consulate General Office. These challenges include the need to arrange travel and accommodation, the logistical complexities of traveling with children, and the necessity of taking additional time off work to undertake the trip. A visit to the London office can put significant strain on individuals based in the North of the country, both financially and logistically. The UK's unpredictable weather conditions, coupled with its notorious public transport system known for frequent delays and cancellations, can exacerbate the stress of traveling. Establishing consular services closer to home would alleviate these burdens and ensure more accessible support for Moroccan families residing in the north.
We are strongly convinced that the significant presence of Moroccans in the North fully justifies this initiative. Establishing an office for the consulate to act as the focal point for this growing community is undoubtedly the right step forward. As Morocco emerges as a global leader in technology, leading Africa in technological advancements, and with London grappling with overcrowding issues prompting families to relocate further away, the timing couldn't be better to establish this connection with the North. Manchester, in particular, is solidifying its status as a technology start-up hub, attracting professionals who increasingly opt to settle there due to its comparative affordability to London and the significant investments being made in the sector.
We respectfully urge our government to consider and approve our request for the establishment of a Consulate General office.
Sincerely,
The Moroccan community
