Supporting H.R.2639 - Global Poverty Act of 2009

Supporting H.R.2639 - Global Poverty Act of 2009

The Issue

Charles Darwin once said, "If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin."  It is our responsibility as an industrialized and advanced nation to reduce global poverty.  Poverty, as defined as living on less than $2 a day, is a major issue in the world.  Poverty not only limits financial opportunities, it denies health, education, standard living conditions, and more.  The Global Poverty Act of 2009 would work collaboratively with the U.N.'s Millennium Goal of halving poverty by 2015.  The components of the Global Poverty Act include trade policy and debt relief increases, which could actually benefit the United States as well.  This Act would also insure that the President submits reports about his actions in regard to the act.  This obligation would inform particular committees of the Act's progress.  I urge you to support the Global Poverty Bill of 2009, sponsored by Representative Adam Smith, D-WA.
