I am writing to you with a request to sign this petition for installing red light cameras at the intersections of 19th St & 10th Ave and 20th St & McDonald Ave.

As many of you know, these intersections often see reckless drivers who routinely speed through the area. We have all seen automobiles and trucks drive through red lights and aggressively outmaneuver each other coming off the Prospect Expressway. As a pedestrian, it is nerve-wracking and even more worrisome given all the children that cross these intersections.

Please support the installation of red light cameras at these busy intersections. Bishop Ford (K280) is one of the largest Pre-K programs in NYC so hundreds of children are crossing these intersections every morning and afternoon. We need crossing guards but if we can get speed cameras to discourage reckless driving, we will see a dramatic improvement.

The DOT has proven cameras work: "In 2021, more than half of vehicles that received one violation did not receive a second. The number of violations at camera locations fell over 70 percent during the hours they were turned on, which both reduces the odds of a crash happening and reduces the likelihood of severe injury if a crash does happen." At a moment when there is so much hardship and conflict in the world, this issue is incredibly simple. We have the solutions to prevent a tragedy. We have the evidence to back them up. We have the public support to implement them. All we need is the political will to make it happen.
