Support Vibrant River Life for Southern California: Demand Fair Flows for the Upper Kern

The Issue

Introduction: The North Fork Kern River, Southern California’s most important stretch of river, is under threat. The Kern River No. 3 (KR3) hydroproject diverts much of its water, leaving it unusable and lifeless  far too often. This isn’t just about water; it’s about preserving a treasure that belongs to all of us. We need your help to convince Southern California Edison (SCE), the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and the United States Forest Service to adopt a new approach that respects this river's true value.

Our Proposal: We propose simple but powerful changes to how water is managed at the KR3 hydroproject. By adjusting water diversions during times when our grid does not need power from KR3, we can revive the river and enhance the public’s access to world-class whitewater recreation without impacting our energy supply or costs. Learn more at kernviverboaters.com.

Here's What We're Asking:

  • Limit water diversion at key times to ensure the river flows more naturally when energy demand is low and we don’t need the power KR3 generates.
  • Implement these changes during crucial months to maximize recreational use and ecological health, without compromising our energy needs.
  • Allow for exceptions during critical high-energy demand times, ensuring a balanced approach.

Why This Matters:

  • Recreation & Ecology: The Kern River is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and a critical habitat for wildlife. Restoring flows will boost local recreation and preserve its ecological integrity.
  • Community & Economy: A vibrant, flowing river attracts visitors, supporting local businesses, and fostering community well-being.
  • Energy Smarts: Our proposal aligns with times when California’s grid has excess renewable energy – meaning we can enjoy the river without losing out on power or increasing greenhouse gases.

The Time for Action Is Now: We cannot let bureaucracy drown out the voice of the community and the needs of the environment. Join us in demanding that SCE, FERC, and USFS embrace a future where the Kern River flows much more freely for the enjoyment of all and the benefit of the ecosystem.

Support Our River, Support Our Future: By signing this petition, you’re not just advocating for changes to a hydroproject; you're standing up for sustainable management of our natural resources, community development, and the principle that public treasures like the Kern River should be enjoyed by all.

Together, we can ensure that the Kern River remains a vibrant, accessible, and thriving part of Southern California’s natural bounty. Let’s make our voices heard and advocate for a fair, balanced, and brighter future for the Kern River.

Sign the petition today and help us keep the Upper Kern River alive and thriving for generations to come. Here are more ideas on how to support our proposal. Thank you for whatever you can do to help!
