The Issue
Youth sports play a crucial role in the development of children, offering them opportunities to build physical skills, social bonds, and self-esteem. In Winnipeg, soccer is a sport that many children love and enjoy. However, despite its popularity, there seems to be a gap in structured league play for U10 players within the community.
We, the concerned parents and supporters of youth soccer in Winnipeg, are urging local soccer associations and governing bodies to create a structured league environment for U10 players for the upcoming outdoor season.
In December 2024, Canada Soccer approved updated Grassroots Standards that were formally made public in February 2025. These new standards emphasize development-focused programming and are set for mandatory nationwide implementation in 2026. The intention behind these standards is to ensure that children's participation in soccer is both enjoyable and beneficial to their growth.
Despite these positive strides, our local soccer associations have yet to include U10 players in organized league play, which would align with these nationally recognized standards. Establishing a league for U10 players not only provides them with a platform to grow and excel in soccer but also supports adherence to the overarching goals outlined by Canada Soccer.
Having a formal league for U10s would equip young players with consistent, high-quality training and game experiences. This fosters a love for the sport, motivates skill development, and encourages lifelong participation in healthy activities. Furthermore, organized league play can help streamline talent identification and support coaches in effectively nurturing young talents.
We believe that the implementation of a U10 league will bridge the current gap and provide a seamless transition for players as they progress through the ranks of youth soccer. Such a league would enable Winnipeg's soccer community to set benchmarks for excellence, contribute to the national soccer framework, and inspire young athletes to strive for their best.
We call upon local soccer clubs, leagues, and the Manitoba Soccer Association to prioritize this initiative and to work towards launching a U10 league for the upcoming season. By doing so, we can ensure that the children in our community have access to an enriched sporting experience that aligns with both local and national objectives.
