The Issue

We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty, supervisors, and community members, express our strong support for the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) graduate program at Touro University and respectfully urge the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) to reconsider its decision to revoke the program’s accreditation.

Many of us chose Touro because it offered a rare and meaningful opportunity to pursue a graduate degree while managing the demands of full-time work, family responsibilities, and community involvement. The program has been a life-changing platform — not only allowing us to access high-quality education, but also helping us become competent and ethical clinicians.

We are proud of the education and training we have received. In fact, many of us have found ourselves better prepared than our peers in clinical traineeships — especially in foundational concepts, therapeutic approaches, cultural diversity, and ethical decision-making. The curriculum is robust and well-integrated, and Touro’s emphasis on culturally responsive care has made a significant difference in our confidence and readiness to serve diverse populations.

The program’s structure, including personalized academic advising, accessible faculty, and efficient support systems, has further contributed to a deeply positive learning experience. Touro’s staff and faculty are responsive, compassionate, and committed to helping students succeed both academically and professionally.

We understand that COAMFTE has identified areas of concern and that the university is appealing the decision. We wholeheartedly support this appeal and respectfully ask COAMFTE to:

Reconsider the revocation decision and grant the program the opportunity to respond fully and transparently.
Provide clear, constructive feedback and allow time for correction or remediation.
Explore alternative measures, such as program probation or conditional accreditation, rather than a complete revocation that would significantly harm current students and the wider community.

Touro’s MFT program serves a crucial role in training future mental health professionals — particularly those from diverse backgrounds and nontraditional educational pathways. Stripping accreditation will not only jeopardize student futures but also limit access to culturally competent care in the communities we aim to serve.

We ask that you listen to our collective voice and take into account the deep value and positive impact of this program. Please stand with us and give Touro the fair and collaborative opportunity to continue shaping ethical, knowledgeable, and compassionate MFTs.
