The Issue

Homelessness remains one of the most pressing social issues in San Diego, with many individuals facing daily struggles to access basic necessities such as food, clothing, and healthcare. For those without stable housing, even routine medical checkups or simple self-care can become impossible. The lack of accessible, coordinated support often traps people in a cycle that is difficult to break without outside help.

Accessible healthcare is one of the greatest unmet needs for this population. Many people experiencing homelessness go without vital medications or medical attention due to cost, limited transportation, or the absence of identification. Providing free or low-cost health services can dramatically improve both short- and long-term outcomes, giving individuals the stability to focus on rebuilding their lives.

Small but meaningful acts of care also make a difference. A free haircut can restore dignity and confidence. Shared meals can strengthen a sense of belonging and ease daily hardship. Clothing donations can help people stay warm, attend interviews, and move forward toward self-sufficiency. These forms of community support matter just as much as medical aid in helping individuals recover stability and hope.

The proposed Pop-Up Health and Social Services Clinic at San Diego State University seeks to address these needs directly. The event will bring together healthcare professionals and SDSU students from majors such as nursing, pre-med, social work, criminal justice, and pre-law to provide free health checkups, social service assistance, and legal support to community members experiencing housing insecurity. Students will gain hands-on experience under professional supervision while making a real difference in the local community.

This petition invites SDSU students to show support for the Pop-Up Clinic and for the university’s commitment to community engagement and experiential learning. Signing indicates agreement that events like this benefit both students and the broader community by combining education, compassion, and service. Together, we can help ensure that those in need receive the dignity, care, and opportunities they deserve.
