Friend,
In case you were thinking twice about joining this Friday’s #ClimateStrike, consider this:
- Our Strikes represent the largest climate mobilisations in Australian history - with over half a million Australians taking to the streets in 2019 alone.
- One year after our movement began, concern about climate reached an all time high, becoming Australians’ #1 personal concern, ahead of the economy.
- Our strikes have saturated the mainstream media and social media, with tens of thousands of media stories generated. Large numbers of journalists have pursued ongoing coverage of the climate crisis since. On the day of the September 20 2019 strike alone, our Facebook page organically reached over 1 million people.
Still on the fence about coming along this Friday? Then, how about this:
- Our Strikes inspire people who have never participated in climate activism before. Almost half of the people who attended our biggest strike, on 20 September 2019, had never been to a climate rally before.
- When surveyed, the vast majority of people who attend our strikes say they are inspired to keep taking action after the Strike.
- Our strikes have garnered the support of thousands of Australian businesses and dozens of unions who realise that the climate crisis IS core business.
- Dozens of Australian Members of Parliament have asked to meet with us and have spoken out about the need for climate action to protect kids’ and future generations.
- Our striking has inspired a major uptick in youth participation across the climate movement. An evaluation survey from the 20 September 2019 showed that, for over one third of strike organisers, this was their first ever organising experience.
But despite all of this momentum, our Government continues to block climate action and put coal and gas ahead of us all.
And so, we need to build on the foundation that we have built in recent years and go deeper - growing our movements to sizes and levels of power never witnessed before. We need to translate the widespread community concern about climate, coal and gas, into lasting political change.
I am very exited (and super nervous) as I will be speaking at the Perth strike. I want you to come to May 21 because we need to show the government that there is a major opposition to a gas led recovery, and that they should stop selling out our future.
In solidarity,
Mena, 14 from Perth
P.S If you can't make it on the day, please support our crowdfunder. We need donations from adults like you to make our strikes safe, accessible and powerful as possible.
