The Issue

GENERAL PROBLEM

Every year thousands of are added to the list of millions of people who have been devastated by either losing a loved one in a traffic collision or emotionaly shaken from the frightening experience of being injured in a collision.

SPECIFIC PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

These harrowing experiences are more frequent in the 21st century because millions more people are satisfying their transportation needs by using (UTVs) unprotected transportation vehicles: shared or private scooters or bicycles, motorized/non motorized skateboards, segways, hoverboards, motored uniwheels, motorized wheelchairs, etc. This means UTV users are also succumbing to an increased number of fatal or physically debilitating collisions. The easiest and most effective way to better protect our unprotected loved ones in the 21st century is to update the tool responsible for allowing  transportation to thrive in 20th century society: our driver’s licensure education and training (DLET).

HISTORY

Let’s appreciate this for a second. At its introduction more than 100+ years ago, a ‘motored vehicle’ was a hi-tech, non-regulated, no license necessary novelty for the rich that was sparse in utility because the few car accomadating roads that existed led to even fewer places. More than a century later, the ubiquity of motor vehicles and the safety afforded by driving education and training has allowed our society to grown in unimaginable and incredible ways.

DEVELOPMENT

Safe travels for everyone on our roads is integral to that continued growth. Because of DLET, safety focused road designs and improved motor vehicle collision avoidance/protection technology, it’s no accident that fewer than .00001% of the 3-4 trillion miles we drive yearly result in unfortunate injuries or deaths.

GOAL

Despite this success, our DLET from the 20th century is woefully inadequate in empowering us to share the roads safely with the ever increasing number of loved ones using UTVs. Therefore it is timely and crucial that we update our DLET to strengthen the safe road sharing that will allow our loved ones to live and our society to thrive in the 21st century. Driver's licensure empowers us to keep each other safe! Update  Safe Road Sharing on the 21st century licensure process to protect our most vulnerable road users.

Although bicyclists and other vulnerable road users also benefit from these factors, they unfortunately have to rely on a licensure scheme that  provides motorists with inadequate safe road sharing education, exams and road tests that are want to protect our vulnerable loved ones. The lack of a nationwide requirement to include safe road sharing questions on driver's license exams and on road tests denies drivers the knowledgeable best practices that would easily and effectively protect vulnerable road users. It also misses the opportunity to create a culture that values our loved ones as much as we do.

To correct this we need to empower motorists by making safe road sharing comprehensive, clear and consistently included on driver's licensure schemes nationwide. Drivers nationwide will then be able to competently, confidently and comfortably share the road safely with cyclists and other vulnerable road users. The better we are at safe road sharing, the more people we successfully protect. Bicycling then becomes more inviting to communities wanting for better transportation options. Everyone should be able to experience the economical, empowering, and environmentally sustainable benefits that this efficient mode of transportation offers:

Pedestrians are safer. No more bikes or personal mobility devices on sidewalks because roads are safer.

Saving money for individuals is assured from reduced transportation costs: gas, car maintenance, car insurance, public transportation, ride hailing and traffic tickets allows resources to go to personal development.

Saving money for cities and communities is welcomed as fewer vehicular infrastructure costs allows funds to be used for community development.

Fewer carbon emissions are healthier for us living in urban city spaces and the environment in general.

Exercise from cycling benefits our mental, physical, emotional and developmental health without reservation.

By simply mandating the inclusion of comprehensive and consistent safe road sharing education and testing on driver’s license schemes nationwide we will empower drivers to feel confident, competent and comfortable when sharing the road and also provide the protection  our  vulnerable loved ones deserve.

Support this initiative now to better protect our loved ones!
