The Issue

Growing up in Telulah Parks, my friends and I have always been passionate about volleyball. We often found ourselves seeking a place to play under the lights, where we could continue our games after the sun sets. Unfortunately, the lack of proper facilities meant we had to resort to playing on unlit concrete courts in various parks. This often led to confrontations with police officers asking us to leave the premises due to safety concerns.

Telulah Parks currently houses an unused parking lot that presents a unique opportunity for transformation. Renovating this space into concrete volleyball courts equipped with adequate lighting would not only provide a safe and legal haven for volleyball enthusiasts like us but would also enhance the community’s recreational offerings.

Volleyball is more than just a sport for us; it's a way of building camaraderie and staying active. With the increasing popularity of volleyball in our community, the demand for designated, well-lit courts has never been more evident. By supporting the renovation of the parking lot, we can create a vibrant hub that caters to the needs of volleyball players of all ages.

Moreover, the construction of these concrete courts will ensure a durable, weather-resistant playing surface that can withstand frequent use, thereby reducing the maintenance costs associated with grass or sand courts. Well-lit courts will also extend playing hours, allowing more people to enjoy the facilities after work or school hours, thereby promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.

We call upon the local council and park management to allocate resources for this project. By investing in these volleyball courts, Telulah Parks will not only see increased foot traffic but will also become a go-to destination for volleyball lovers throughout the region.

Please sign this petition to support the renovation of an unused parking lot into concrete volleyball courts with lights at Telulah Parks. Let's make our community a better place for everyone to enjoy their favorite sport.

I checked in with our Parks and Rec department director and he hasn't had anyone reach out or connect with him on this opportunity. Is there a way to connect with the author of the petition and make sure a meeting happens with him and the city? I don't think its a matter of having support or not, I'm just concerned no one has contacted the city directly to inquire about the possibility. Thank you! Alder Vaya Jones, District 10 Appleton [Note from Change.org Staff: We have shared Alder Jones' message and contact information with the petition starter so they can connect. I’ll continue to monitor for any updates that come from their conversation. This is a positive step — when a city official requests direct contact, it often means they are open to hearing more, asking questions, and understanding the community’s perspective firsthand. These conversations can help inform future discussions inside the agency and ensure that community voices are part of the process early on!]

Below is some more information from Parks & Rec Deputy Director Tom Flick, please pass it along to the petitioners. Thank you! - Vered Meltzer Alderperson, Appleton District 2 _______________________________________________ The CORP identifies the existing old parking lot at the intersection of Newberry and Weimar at Telulah Park as future sport courts with lights and off street parking. See below, item labeled F are the proposed sport courts. Absolutely this is a reasonable request, our department supports this space to be asphalt volleyball courts. Timber and I recently met with an Oshkosh college student about this idea and location. Good to hear there is some movement and support happening behind the scenes with a petition. The current condition of the existing asphalt is in rough shape to play volleyball on. A positive, we have an existing gravel base and asphalt that can be pulverized to add more base for a future repaving that will save money. As for lights I would have to put some more time into what would it take to light up the area again. To do this right with a reconstruction of the lot, drain tile, fencing/nets, striping, lights, ADA accessibility to the site and parking, looking at $350,000. Once design is completed, I could have talks with DPW to see if they would do the paving and not charge for wages, just material costs to save some money. Let me know if you have any questions. Take care.
