The leadership of any educational institution plays a crucial role in shaping its environment and ensuring the well-being of both students and staff. However, Ben Sells, the current school president of Ouachita Baptist University, has unfortunately failed in this essential duty. The persistent use of abusive language towards respected and beloved faculty members, as well as the administration’s implementation of hostile policies towards multiple departments and programs has severely hindered the educational process and created an unwelcoming atmosphere for all Ouachitonians.

More than five members of faculty have reported instances where the president's language not only disrespected individuals but also belittled certain departments within the school. This kind of behavior is unacceptable in any setting, let alone in a place of learning where respect, support, and godly education should be paramount.

Moreover, the current administration has overseen the illegal removal of previous faculty, and is refusing to hire replacements for the many faculty members who are currently retiring. This effectively cripples Ouachita’s ability to educate in the small classroom setting that we Tigers have always prided ourselves on. Instead of fostering a nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning and growth, these policies have contributed to stress, disengagement, and a decline in overall school morale. Education is meant to be empowering, not stifling or oppressive, yet under the current leadership, the latter has unfortunately been our reality.

Verifiable statistics support the negative impact of such leadership. A recent faculty vote found that 71% of faculty members have no confidence in Sells ability to lead our school.

The goal of this petition is to bring about a change in leadership that will rebuild a harmonious and supportive educational environment. We urge the board of trustees to consider this petition seriously and take immediate action towards the dismissal of the current school president. This step is crucial for the reinstatement of a positive school culture that is essential for academic success and personal development.
