Support the protection of Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia
The Issue
Ethiopia, a country rich in cultural heritage and spiritual significance, has long been a refuge of diversity and religious harmony. However, recent reports of violence, targeted attacks on places of worship, killings, displacements, intimidation, and other human rights violations against Orthodox Christians are deeply troubling. These acts not only threaten the safety and security of the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian community but also undermine the broader principles of freedom of religion and human rights in Ethiopia.
As a Canadian deeply connected to both my home country and Ethiopia, I have witnessed the enormous contributions both nations have made to celebrate diversity and uphold fundamental rights. Yet, it pains me to see a nation as historically profound as Ethiopia marred by violence against religious communities. Ethiopia's Orthodox Christians, who have cherished their traditions for centuries, deserve the same security and freedom to practice their faith as anyone else across the globe.
We respectfully call upon the Government of Canada to take a firm stance in supporting efforts aimed at protecting Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia. Concrete steps must be taken to advocate for peace and ensure that freedom of religion and safety prevail. Canada, known for its dedication to human rights and peacekeeping, has the potential to influence positive change in Ethiopia by engaging diplomatically, providing humanitarian aid, and leveraging international partnerships.
Through concerted efforts, Canada can play a pivotal role in promoting stability and safeguarding the rights of Orthodox Christians and all Ethiopian civilians at risk. The international community's action is crucial; silence or inaction is not an option while human rights violations occur in Ethiopia.
Join us in urging the Canadian government to stand up for human rights and religious freedoms in Ethiopia. Please sign this petition to make a difference in the lives of those afflicted and promote peace and harmony in Ethiopia.
