The Issue

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe, hormone-based mood disorder that causes intense emotional and physical symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which typically resolves shortly after menstruation begins. These symptoms can significantly disrupt daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. PMDD affects approximately 5% to 8%, or 1 in 20, of those of reproductive age.

The International Association for Premenstrual Disorders advocates for those affected by PMDD by raising awareness, providing evidence-based resources, offering peer support, and advancing research and education. Through this work, we have witnessed firsthand the profound and often devastating impact PMDD has on individuals and families. Despite its severity and the fact that it can be life-threatening, PMDD remains widely misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed. Too many people are left to suffer in silence without access to appropriate care and support. Persistent gaps in research and funding continue to limit understanding, delay diagnosis, and restrict effective treatment options.

The  PMDD Awareness and Research Act (H.R. 8160) represents a critical step toward changing this reality. This legislation seeks to raise awareness, expand research funding, and improve care for those affected by PMDD. With greater awareness and scientific understanding, we can strengthen diagnostic practices, develop effective treatments, and offer hope to millions worldwide. Passing this act would establish a more coordinated approach to addressing the unmet needs surrounding PMDD. It would support much needed research, reduce stigma, and help ensure that those affected have access to appropriate care and resources. Supporting this bill means recognizing the seriousness of PMDD and committing to advancing knowledge, treatment, and care for a condition that has too often been overlooked.

We urge you to join us in supporting the PMDD Awareness and Research Act (H.R. 8160). Your voice can make a meaningful difference for those who have gone unheard for far too long. Sign this petition to help advance awareness, research, and care, and to drive real change for millions affected by PMDD.
