The Issue

To All Local Government Bodies & Officials Whom It May Concern, The People Bring Before You These Grievances & Demands:

  1. Housing
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns around deteriorating housing conditions, high rent, bad landlords, rising homelessness, & gentrification of communities such as the Southside.
    • Demand: We want better living conditions, affordable housing, and that landlords be held accountable for abuses if tenant rights.
  2. Food Insecurity
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the alarming disparities in food access in underserved communities, like the Southside, where there seems to be an abundance of liquor stores, vape shops, and dollar stores but only one grocery store.
    • Demand: We want guaranteed access to adequately nutritious & healthy food for all, particularly underserved communities, like the Southside.
  3. Transportation
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the lack of efficient and accessible public transportation services, which presents a barrier in access to basic necessities & services.
    • Demand: We want guaranteed access to efficient & accessible public transportation that ensures residents have access to basic necessities and services.
  4. Employment
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the lack of employment that pays workers a livable wage which has led to high poverty rates (40% in the city & 25% in the county).
    • Demand: We want better advocacy on behalf of our local workforce to ensure all workers are being paid wages that guarantee a dignified standard of living.
  5. Healthcare
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the quality of our healthcare infrastructure, response times of emergency services, and lack of adequate mental health services.
    • Demand: We want guaranteed availability and accessibility to quality and acceptable healthcare services & infrastructure, including emergency & mental health services.
  6. Childcare
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the lack of adequate services to support families with children, particularly those with learning, mental, and/or physical disabilities.
    • Demand: We want better access to/expansion of childcare services and resources, particularly for those with learning, mental, and/or physical disabilities.
  7. Education
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the existing educational disparities that will be worsened by current federal and state policies attacking DEI, as well as the dismantling of the Department of Education especially considering that close to 70% of our public school students are Black.
    • Demand: We want a quality, honest, & culturally relevant educational experience for our students in the public school system, as well as accountability for institutions of higher education that have long standing discriminatory admission practices and harbor hostile learning and social environments for students of color.
  8. Public Safety
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns about the failure to hold law enforcements officers when misconduct occurs and is reported. Communities of color are often over-policed which increases the likelihood of hostile interactions.
    • Demand: We want an end to the over-policing of Black communities & residents and demand greater accountability when misconduct by law enforcement is reported.  Along with that, we want greater investment in community and youth programs which are proven to prevent crime more than more policing.
  9. Protection of vulnerable communities
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns around the heightened vulnerability of certain communities such as the Black community, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community within our current political climate.
    • Demand: We want local government to take a stronger stance in protecting communities & demographics made vulnerable by policies of the current federal and state administrations. No one should live in fear because of their race, nationality, immigration status, gender, or sexuality.
  10. Safe Spaces/Infrastructure
    • Grievance: Residents of Milledgeville & Baldwin County have raised concerns over accessibility to safe spaces, public infrastructure, green spaces, etc, that grant communities spaces in which they can safely congregate and participate in productive activities without barriers.
    • Demands: We want more accessible green spaces, community centers, and infrastructure that encourages communal activity in a safe, productive, and healthy manner. People are products of their environment.

Will our politicians commit to change?
