I have stood shoulder to shoulder with friends who sacrificed their lives in the fight against ISIS. These brave souls, predominantly from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), put their lives on the line for freedom and safety – not just theirs, but ours as well. Now, as we ponder the fates of many who trusted us and fought alongside us, we must confront a difficult reality: they are in grave danger, facing the brutality of the Syrian regime. This is a crisis of humanity that calls upon our common sense and collective conscience to act.

The Kurdish population in Syria, integral members of the SDF, played a key role in the battle against ISIS. This fight was not only theirs but was fought for global peace and security, actively preventing the spread of terrorism that threatens us all. It is unjust and inhumane now to abandon these courageous fighters and the civilians they protect. By turning a blind eye to their plight, we betray our own values of justice and freedom.

The Syrian regime has waged a campaign of violence against the Kurdish people that is brutal and ongoing. Reports by international and local human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, document numerous incidents of persecution and violence. It is time for the international community to step in decisively.

We must press our governments to enact urgent sanctions against the Syrian regime and to establish a no-fly zone over Kurdish areas. Diplomatic pressure must be coupled with humanitarian aid to support the SDF and the affected Kurdish civilian population. These steps are not only moral imperatives but strategic necessities to maintain stability in the region and uphold international peace.
