The Issue

As a Christian and a member of the Lake Norman community, I have been appalled by the unwarranted hate directed toward our Muslim neighbors who are striving to build a mosque/education center and permanent office space in Mooresville, NC. This mosque, an extension of the Islamic Center of Lake Norman, represents not only a place of worship for our Muslim community but also a promise of cultural diversity, understanding, and unity.

The misinformation being spread about American Muslims is alarming and detrimental. For instance, stereotypes suggesting that mosques are breeding grounds for extremism have no basis in fact. According to a 2018 study by the Pew Research Center, Muslims in America are as religiously diverse as any other faith group and overwhelmingly dedicated to peace and community development.

This mosque aims to serve as a permanent center for worship, education, and charity for a group that has already been established in Mooresville since 2011, but have been utilizing a smaller, rented space. It promises to enrich our town, providing everyone with an opportunity to learn more about our Muslim friends and neighbors, and to foster a community that is inclusive and welcoming.

Over the past decade, Mooresville and the broader Lake Norman area have seen substantial growth in diversity. We are enriched by a tapestry of cultures that bring new perspectives and a deeper understanding of what it means to be an American. Let us honor these values by supporting the Islamic Center's efforts to build their place of worship.

By signing this petition, you are standing up to hate and fear, and instead advocating for love, understanding, and community solidarity. Let’s show the city leaders of Mooresville, who have recently been inundated with calls to halt this building project for racist, hateful, and deeply misinformed reasons, that there are MANY in Mooresville and surrounding Lake Norman communities who support our Muslim friends and welcome their building project. Lake Norman should be a place where everyone is welcome and can practice their faith in peace.

Thanks for reaching out. There is no vote or decision to be made by the Board of Commissioners on this development. As long as the applicant follows the Unified Development Ordinance, they can build their proposed facility given the "by right nature" of the zoning for that area. I expect that the Town will respect all laws and honor the Constitutional rights of people of all faiths to practice their religion. Here is a link to the statement provided on 3 August on the topic: https://www.mooresvillenc.gov/news_detail_T4_R417.php Regards, Dana

In my previous time on the city council and my 30 years on the police department I do not comment on petitions one way or the other and make no comment which could be mistaken by either side.
