Support the Initiative to Have An Ocoee, FL Street Named After Rosemary Slaughter-Pate

The Issue

Rosemary was a beloved member of the Ocoee, FL community.

Rosemary was loved by those around her.  She was a 28 year veteran employee at Lockheed Martin - Orlando, and contributed to her community as a mentor, supporter of the American Diabeties Association, and many other volunteer efforts.

What people didn't know is that Rosemary dealt with unimaginable abuse from the person she loved the most, her biological son.  The abuse began when he was a minor.

No matter what Rosemary did, there was no where for her to get the help they desperately needed.  She suffered in silence for years.  Rosemary would seek help for herself & her son, to only be denied time & time again. Minor Child to Parent Violence was not identified as a form of domestic violence at that time.

That abuse resulted in her death.  Her only son murdered her in 2013 (Report - https://www.wesh.com/article/pd-son-stabbed-mother-to-death-friends-helped-clean-up/3796396

In our pain, we learned that many parents and caretakers were suffering abuse by children that the law said they were legally obligated to take care of. There was nothing but guilt and shame for these families to endure, alone.

The family & friends of Rosemary began to work tirelessly to be sure that no other family would have to endure their pain.  We, those that loved Rosemary the most, took action and lobbied for support for these families, and our efforts led to historic legislation that recognized the phenomenon known as "Minor Child to Parent Violence" as a form of domestic violence, the first law of its kind in the United States  (Report - https://www.orangeobserver.com/news/2015/jun/25/winter-garden-family-works-state-leaders-create-laws-protecting-parents-abuse/

Rosemary's life and her legacy deserves to be acknowledged and remembered.  Rosemary lived in Ocoee, FL at the time of her death, and on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 6:30 PM, we will go before the Ocoee City Commission to request a street be named after her & forever remember how her life's story will help so many other families that silently suffer.
