Support the Housing First Model to End Homelessness

The Issue

As a Housing Case Manager, I witness firsthand how housing insecurity impacts individuals and families on a daily basis. Many rental supplements are inadequate for securing stable housing, and existing programs often have restrictive preconditions that are difficult for most people in need to meet. Some housing initiatives can take years before a referral is processed, leaving individuals and families without a home for far too long. Systemic barriers, such as insufficient affordable housing, complex eligibility rules, and fragmented support services, continuously keep people trapped in a cycle of homelessness.

Housing should be recognized as a fundamental human right. Yet, across the United States, the rising cost of living and limited affordable housing options are causing thousands of our neighbors to experience homelessness. This is simply unacceptable in a society as wealthy and resourceful as ours.

We have a solution at hand: the Housing First Model. This approach prioritizes providing people experiencing homelessness with permanent housing as quickly and directly as possible. It addresses other challenges once a stable home environment is secured. Housing First has been proven time and again to be a cost-effective solution. It helps individuals achieve better outcomes in employment, healthcare, and education. Studies have shown that this model reduces the use of public services like emergency rooms and shelters, thereby saving taxpayer money and improving public welfare.

We call on lawmakers and community leaders to support and expand Housing First programs nationwide. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone has the chance to thrive and contribute.

Supporting Housing First is not only an ethical obligation but also a practical one. Let's prioritize stable housing for all and work together to dismantle the barriers that keep people homeless. Join us in advocating for change and making a tangible difference.

Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to recognize and implement the Housing First Model as a key strategy to end homelessness in our communities.
