Support the enactment of Blues Law in Florida
The Issue
On November 1, 2025, my life changed forever. My 19-year-old son, full of dreams and aspirations, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. He was on his way home when a car recklessly pulled out in front of him, leading to a fatal collision. The aftermath was devastating, and to our shock, the driver faced minimal consequences due to the lack of stringent laws. This personal tragedy compels me to advocate for an essential change: the enactment of Blues Law in Florida.
Blues Law is a proposed legal initiative aimed at delivering justice and ensuring safer roads for motorcyclists. In cases where a car collides with a motorcycle resulting in a fatality, the law would mandate a compulsory blood draw for the car's driver. Presently, this procedure is not obligatory, allowing irresponsible drivers to evade serious repercussions with mere slaps on the wrist.
Under Blues Law, such negligent behavior would be classified as a second-degree felony, carrying severe penalties. Convicted individuals would face up to 15 years in Florida State prison, an equivalent probation period, and fines reaching $10,000. These stringent measures would act as a deterrent, discouraging careless driving and prioritizing the safety of motorcyclists.
The statistics surrounding motorcycle accidents are alarming. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash. The State of Florida has one of the highest rates of motorcycle fatalities in the U.S. Such harrowing numbers underscore the urgent need for legislative action that Blues Law represents.
This law is not just about punishing those at fault; it's about changing behavior and saving lives on our roads. By holding drivers accountable, we can foster a safer driving culture and provide peace of mind for the families who have suffered unspeakable losses, like mine.
