Support the Creation of a Women's Peer Led Drop In Centre in the Illawarra
The issue
Peer led support is not valued, recognise and appreciated as it should be.
Be apart of and support the creation of Beacon of Hope Project: Women's Drop In Centre. A Peer-Driven I Purpose-Focused I Community-Led Drop in Centre!
The Goal:
We, Beacon of Hope Project, call on local and state representatives, community stakeholders, and funding bodies to support the establishment of a physical, peer-led women’s sanctuary, in the Illawarra region.
Since September 2025, Beacon of Hope Project has been apart of proving that peer-led support isn't just a "nice-to-have", it is a lifeline. With over 200 local individuals already engaged in Beacon of Hope Project initiatives, the data is undeniable: women in our community are seeking connection, understanding, and support from those who have walked in their shoes. Feedback of feeling safe, seen and heard shows the impact. While we will always want to maintain a hybrid model to ensure accessibility, our growing community needs a centralized hub. This hub will serve as a sanctuary for:
- Peer-Led Wellbeing Groups: Focused on emotional, mental, social, and educational health and wellbeing.
- A Safe Drop-In Space: Providing immediate social connection and a "soft-landing" for those in crisis.
- Emergency Resource Centre: A deadicated hub for our 'You Matter' packs and other essential items.
- Educational Programs: Empowering women through skill-building, education and community participation.
- Professional Services & Advocacy: A dedicated home for the upcoming "Assisting Her" initiative (witness and advocacy program), NDIS Support Coordination, and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching, support with external referrals, etc.
By funding peer work and a dedicated women's focused peer space , we help reduce the stigma of seeking help and foster a unique environment of mutual respect and empowerment. A women's peer led, drop in centre won't just be a building; it will be a place of safety, support and hope.
This petition is more than a request for funding; it is a demonstration of community interest and support. By signing, you are sending a clear message to decision-makers.
