Support the Creation of a Science Museum at the Site of Boise Factory Outlet Mall

The Issue

As a resident of Boise and a passionate advocate for education and community development, I've watched our city grow and evolve in ways that constantly inspire me. However, the recent proposal to replace the Boise Factory Outlet Mall with a heavy truck dealership sparked a deep concern in me about the direction we're taking in terms of urban development and land use.

I've always believed that Boise has the potential to be a beacon of innovation, education, and sustainability in Idaho and beyond. That's why I propose we pivot towards a future where these values are not just upheld but actively promoted. The idea of transforming the Boise Factory Outlet Mall into a science museum came to me as a perfect embodiment of this vision.

This isn't just about preventing another commercial development; it's about creating a space that educates, inspires, and serves our community. A science museum in this prime location would be a hub for learning, a destination for families, and a testament to our commitment to fostering curiosity and innovation. It would leverage the visibility and accessibility of the site to attract visitors from across the Treasure Valley and beyond, providing educational programs in partnership with local tech companies, universities, and research institutions.

Moreover, this project aligns with Mayor Lauren McLean’s and the Boise City Council’s demonstrated commitment to sustainability and community engagement. By repurposing existing structures, we also adhere to principles of sustainable development, reducing waste and conserving resources.

I envision a museum that not only showcases the wonders of science and technology but also becomes a vibrant community center where children and adults alike can dream about the future. This vision is driven by my belief in the power of education to change lives and my love for our city that deserves the best we can offer.

If you have never been to an interactive science museum, here are some great examples of how awesome they can be:

  • The National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C.
  • The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Dallas, TX
  • The Tech Interactive, San Jose, CA
  • The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN
  • Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, IL
  • COSI: The Center of Science and Industry, Columbus, OH
  • California Science Center, Los Angeles, CA
  • Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA
  • Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN
  • Discovery Place Science, Charlotte, NC
  • Arkansas Museum of Discovery, Little Rock, AR
  • Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ
  • Science Museum Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, OK
  • Explora, Albuquerque, NM

Now is the time to act because the decision to replace the mall with a dealership is imminent, with planning and zoning hearings already scheduled. We must seize this critical moment to voice our alternative vision for Boise's development, one that aligns with our community values and the broader goals of sustainability and education. Delaying action means missing a rare chance to shape our city’s identity and legacy. By signing this petition, you are not just opposing another commercial development; you are advocating for a space that promises to inspire, educate, and unite our community for generations to come.
