Support the Black Repertory Group Theatre: Preserving a Cultural Gem and Empowering Our Community

We, the undersigned members of the community, unite in support of the Black Repertory Group Theatre (BRG), a cherished institution that has stood as a cornerstone of South Berkeley and the wider East Bay since 1964. As a longstanding theatrical organization, BRG has played a pivotal role in serving under-served populations, fostering personal growth, building self-esteem, and nurturing a sense of belonging among community members. In the words of Dr. Mona Vaughn-Scott, "the theater is used as a means to uplift the individual and in turn, uplift the community."

Throughout its rich history, the Black Repertory Group Theatre has provided a vital platform for diverse voices and narratives, creating a space where stories and experiences of the Black community are celebrated, shared, and understood. By offering a wide range of theatrical productions, workshops, and educational programs, it has cultivated a space where individuals from all walks of life can come together, learn, and grow.

Since 1987, the Black Repertory Group Theatre has been leasing the property on Adeline Street with the dream of eventually owning the space to secure its permanent position in the community. As the City of Berkeley and BRG enter lease negotiations, we kindly request your support in realizing this aspiration. We call upon community members to join forces to preserve this invaluable institution and help BRG sustain its occupancy at its current location. Together, we can safeguard the Black Repertory Group Theatre's legacy as a beacon of hope, cultural pride, and community empowerment for generations to come.

By signing this petition, we express our steadfast commitment to supporting the Black Repertory Group Theatre’s longevity, visionary leadership, dedicated staff, and talented performers.
