Support the BBC Documentary India-The Modi Question

The Issue

I have just watched the BBC documentary India: The Modi Question and would like to thank all those involved in the project for shedding some much needed light on Narendra Modi.

Being of Indian descent I have watched with horror how India has changed politically and socially over the past few decades.

The diversity of the Indian population was something we took for granted. We identified as family regardless of religious background both in India and abroad.

However in recent years the BJP, with the support of extreme organisations such as the VHP and RSS, has driven discord between Indians, creating an atmosphere of distrust, fear and even hatred.

The climate seems to be changing even in the UK as evidenced by the recent events in Leicester.

India itself is on the verge of a genocide against Muslims, Chiristians and other minorities and the world can no longer sit back and allow this tragedy to continue unfolding.

Too often Muslims, Christians, people from oppressed castes and those who dissent are targeted and often killed in the BJP’s relentless drive to make India a Brahminical Hindu state.

What should have been an adventurous holiday for Imran Dawood, Shakeel Dawood, Saeed Dawood and Mohammad Aswat from the UK, turned to horror when three of the men were tortured and murdered. Imran Dawood, a young teen at the time, survived despite being stabbed. Spared his life only because the attackers presumed they had killed him.

Over 20 years later Imran continues to suffer from the trauma of that fateful day. The agony experienced by Imran, and the families and friends of murdered Shakeel Dawood, Saeed Dawood and Mohammad Aswat unnecessarily exacerbated by the remains of the three men still being at large in India.

This is multiplied by the untold amount of suffering by those in India itself, the 2000+ people murdered and countless more tortured, all with no hope of any justice to come.

And individuals who tried to uncover the truth Haren Pandya, Sanjiv Bhatt and many others have been killed or imprisoned. Many others, intimidated into silence.

We hope that this series drives the UK government to push for justice for Shakeel Dawood, Saeed Dawood and Mohammad Aswat and even though they can’t be brought back to life, the handing over of their remains to their families can offer some solace.

Proponents of Modi boast about him being the leader of the largest Democracy in the world. Let’s not forget that Hitler too was democratically elected. Numerous parallels including creating a climate of intimidation and distrust, marginalisation of minorities, arbitrary arrests and suspicious murders should ring alarm bells.

Ultimately it is hoped that the series by the BBC goes some way towards educating the world about India and preventing a Holocaust in a country with such beauty, diversity and tolerance.
