Background:

Animal Cruelty:
Animal cruelty is inherent in the fur industry. Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in brutal ways for fur-based fashion. Most are forced to spend their entire lives in filthy, cramped cages on fur factory farms. These undomesticated animals suffer greatly, deprived of the ability to engage in natural behaviors, like swimming, digging, and running, and are typically killed in brutal ways, such as neck-breaking, anal electrocution, or suffocation in gas chambers. Many are skinned alive while still conscious.

The immense suffering these animals endure is evidenced below in an undercover investigation of a fur farm in Poland (Warning: graphic content)

Environment and Public Health:
The fur industry also poses serious environmental and public health threats. On fur factory farms, waste runoff from animals can pollute the soil and waterways. The tanning and dying process uses toxic and carcinogenic chemicals to prevent the animals’ skin from decaying. Fur farms are also hotbeds for diseases that can and do pass to humans and nearby wildlife. To date, nearly 500 fur farms raising mink in the U.S. and internationally have documented outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus, with infections reported among the mink, in people who had contact with them, and in wild mink trapped near infected farms.

The Changing Times:
Growing public concern for animal welfare and environmental protection is leading fashion brands, retailers, cities, and countries to move away from animal fur once and for all. In the U.S., cities and counties from coast to coast have passed ordinances to end the sale of new fur products in their communities. In 2019, California voted to become the first state to end the sale of new fur products. Internationally, Israel banned fur sales in 2021. More than 20 European countries have either banned or restricted fur farming.

The Impact of this Bill:
A statewide bill to end the sale of new fur products is a commonsense policy that will benefit our community. It impacts only the retail sales of new, finished fur products, of which the vast majority (roughly 85%) are derived from animals raised in fur factory farms. Resale shops will be able to continue selling used fur products, and it does not impact Nevada hunters or trappers, who typically sell fur pelts, not finished fur products.

By passing a statewide bill and eliminating the sale of new fur products, Nevada has the opportunity to help end the cruelty and environmental harm caused by the fur industry and limit diseases spread by fur farms including COVID-19. There are many sustainable and fashion alternatives to fur. As Nevadans, it is time to champion the welfare of animals and do away with this cruelty and violence that is the fur industry.
