Support the approved Wiley Canyon Project and not a 1400-unit affordable housing complex!
The Issue
Our Calgrove neighborhood is at risk of being swamped by a 1400-unit, multi-story affordable housing development!
The Santa Clarita City Council has just approved a more modest and thoughtful project on the site of the former Smiser Mule Ranch on Wiley Canyon.
BUT a small group of local neighbors are threatening a lawsuit which would derail this sensible project and lead to a new developer taking over the site and building a massive development that would have a significant negative impact on:
- Safety
- Traffic
- Parking encroachment
These same neighbors did important work with the developer to express their concerns about the project and, as a result, the developer reduced its size by 40%. So, while we have appreciation for these neighbors’ efforts, their threat of litigation is worrisome.
The threat to our neighborhood is real. A lawsuit could force the current developer to sell to one who would use California state housing law to recklessly build a monster 1400-unit development in our backyard. And neither the City of Santa Clarita nor local residents will have any say about the scope of the project or impact on our neighborhoods.
We urge you to sign this petition supporting the current project and express your opposition to a lawsuit that would negatively affect the hundreds of families who live in our community.
Time is of the essence!
Here are some details about the approved Village at Wiley Canyon:
- The project has been extensively reviewed by the Santa Clarita City Planning Commission and City Council, with both approving the project. Its environmental impact has also been studied and approved by the City's traffic engineers and the LA County Fire Department
- The developer listened to community concerns and, as a result, voluntarily reduced the size of the project by 40%
- The property is zoned for mixed use and a commercial project WILL be built. The approved Wiley Canyon project is the best one ever submitted for the site and surrounding neighborhoods
- The Village @ Wiley Canyon will consist of up to 232 two-story residential units, inclusive of a maximum of eight attached Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs); a 120-unit, four-story assisted-living facility, up to 9,000 square feet of commercial floor area and a one-acre park
- Neighborhood and street/traffic improvements include three new roundabouts on Wiley Canyon to slow down traffic and discourage use of Calgrove Blvd & Wiley Cyn Road as a cut through road, new sidewalks, bike lanes and landscaping.
- New sidewalk and bike lane to Towsley Canyon
- Mitigation to stop flooding on Wiley Canyon during rain
