Support Teachers: End the Burnout Crisis in Massachusetts Schools

Support Teachers: End the Burnout Crisis in Massachusetts Schools
The Issue
As someone who has witnessed the impact of teacher burnout firsthand, I’m calling on Massachusetts leaders to take urgent action. I’ve seen dedicated teachers in public schools, especially those serving diverse and under-resourced communities, become overwhelmed, undervalued, and unsupported. When teachers are stretched thin, it’s not just their well-being that suffers; it’s their students who miss out on the education they deserve.
Constant turnover, unstable classrooms, and the emotional toll of burnout create a ripple effect that hurts the entire school community. If we want our children to succeed, we must support the people who show up for them every single day. That starts with investing in teachers' mental health, fair compensation, and the structural reforms they urgently need.
Other countries are leading the way. The United Kingdom has taken a proactive approach through a national organization called Education Support, which offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, financial assistance, and tailored mental health resources for educators. Massachusetts should follow their lead and establish a similar statewide initiative to protect the well-being of our teachers.
I am urging the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and state lawmakers to take the following actions:
- Create a statewide teacher wellness program modeled after the UK’s Education Support, including crisis counseling and mental health days.
- Reduce class sizes and hire more classroom staff to make workloads manageable.
- Increase teacher salaries and benefits to reflect the value of their work.
- Provide retention bonuses and clear opportunities for career growth and professional development.
- Offer more planning time and protect boundaries between work and home life.
