Support Tailored Water Solutions for East Coast, NZ
The issue
In the East Coast region of New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, many whanau are struggling daily due to inadequate water supply systems. I've witnessed firsthand how disputes over water access are fracturing communities and damaging the sacred relationships within our families. It is heartbreaking to see such conflict over a resource so vital to our existence, especially when practical and immediate solutions exist.
The current water infrastructure proposals for the area are exorbitantly expensive, projected to cost between $20 to $50 million, as seen in the Northland community's proposals. Instead, we advocate for a more cost-effective and timely solution by installing a 30,000-litre rainwater tank for each household in need. This solution leverages available technologies and can be rolled out immediately, ensuring each family has access to rainwater capture and storage.
This tailored approach is not only economically viable but also provides a sustainable model for water supply that empowers households and respects the autonomy of local communities. By reducing the dependency on large-scale projects and costly infrastructures, we can address current needs more directly and swiftly.
Opotiki District Councillors have an opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact by supporting this initiative. It is imperative to recognize and act on this opportunity to strengthen community ties, prevent further disputes, and ensure every household has equitable access to water.
Join us in urging the Opotiki District Council to implement this tailored water solution. Let us come together to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our whanau and communities.
Sign this petition to support a practical, sustainable, and community-focused solution for water access on the East Coast.
