Support Sustainable Living: Legalize Backyard Chickens in Mooresville
The Issue
Who is impacted? Who should sign?
Currently, many Mooresville Indiana residents are unable to enjoy the benefits of backyard chicken-keeping due to restrictive ordinances. Every resident of Mooresville who values sustainable living, local food options, and community well-being is impacted. This includes:
- Families who want to provide fresh eggs for their children.
- Gardeners and eco-conscious individuals interested in composting and natural pest control.
- Educators and parents seeking hands-on learning opportunities for kids.
- Seniors and hobbyists looking for a rewarding, low-impact outdoor activity.
- Anyone who supports environmental sustainability and local food systems.
You don't have to want chickens yourself to support this change. Signing the petition simply means you support your neighbors' right to responsibly keep backyard hens under fair, clear rules.
What is at stake?
Without change, residents remain unable to enjoy the many benefits of backyard hens - fresh eggs, reduced household waste, natural fertilizer, pest control, and increased food security - even while other towns embrace these sustainable practices.
We risk falling behind in neighboring communities that are advancing eco-friendly policies and allowing their citizens more autonomy in sustainable living. More importantly, we deny families and individuals the freedom to make simple, responsible choices that align with their values and well-being.
Why is now the time to act?
There's never been a better time to move forward:
- Interest in self-sufficiency, local food, and sustainability is at an all-time high
- More towns and cities across the country are updating their ordinances to allow backyard hens with great success
- The current economic climate makes local food sources more valuable then ever
- We're building momentum with community support, ready to work with own leaders to ensure thoughtful and respectful regulations
Now is the time to raise our voices, build community support, and bring this common-sense, sustainable option to Mooresville.
We, the undersigned residents of Mooresville, support the amendment of our town’s ordinances to allow the responsible keeping of backyard hens (excluding roosters) in residential zones.
Backyard chickens are a sustainable source of fresh eggs, reduced food waste, and help control pests naturally. They also provide educational opportunities for families and promote environmentally friendly practices. Dozens of towns across the state and country have successfully implemented similar policies.
We are asking our town officials to adopt reasonable, community-friendly guidelines, including:
A limit of 8-12 hens per household
1 rooster if allowed
Clean, enclosed coops and runs with property line setbacks
No on-site slaughtering
Optional permit requirement (with minimal fee if warranted by the town)
We believe Mooresville should support responsible chicken keeping as a positive step toward sustainability, education, and community resilience.
