The Issue
Growing up in Barangay Kanaan, I watched my father and uncles toiling tirelessly as corn and coconut farmers. They dedicated their lives to these fields, working from dawn to dusk. Yet, despite their relentless efforts, high input costs and exploitative middleman prices leave them struggling to make ends meet. This reality hits hardest when families sacrifice necessities like school supplies or medicine just to sustain their farms.
Farmers across our barangay are falling into crippling debt to keep their livelihoods afloat. It's a cycle of hardship familiar to many in communities like ours, where agriculture is the backbone of life. Without intervention, the future of farming in Barangay Kanaan is at risk, threatening the well-being of countless families.
To ensure sustainable livelihoods for our farmers, it's crucial to address these systemic issues. We must push for direct access to markets, fair pricing mechanisms, and affordable agricultural inputs. Furthermore, providing financial literacy and management training can empower farmers to manage their resources effectively and escape the debt trap.
In alignment with sustainable development goals, we urge local government and agricultural bodies to establish programs that support our farmers' needs over the long term. By doing so, they can cultivate a future where our hard-working farmers are rewarded fairly for their contributions to the community and the economy.
