Support the Marina Central Park study!

The Issue

Built in the 1960s, the Marina Freeway (State Route 90) was originally envisioned as a 50-mile-long thoroughfare connecting State Route 1 (Lincoln Bl) to State Route 91 in East Anaheim. However, due to community opposition, only 3.1 miles were ever built. The 90 freeway today is LA’s shortest and least trafficked freeway – essentially a glorified on/offramp to the 405.

The freeway divided the community of Del Rey into two groups: the “haves” (south of the 90) and “have-nots” (north of the 90). Shockingly, 54% of the census tracts around the 90 are considered Historically Disadvantaged Communities. An it’s not healthy for those living nearby – the 90 causes elevated levels of air and water pollution.

In response to these issues, Streets For All, a Los Angeles-based advocacy organization, proposed a visionary concept: Marina Central Park.

The vision imagines replacing the 90 with nearly 4,000 units of affordable housing featuring retail below, an expansive and beautiful new park, a bus rapid transit line connecting Lincoln Bl to Sepulveda Bl, and dedicated bike and pedestrian trails. You can also read more on the FAQ page, in the L.A. Times, and in other publications.

A plan like this takes massive amounts of research. Currently, Streets For All is proposing a feasibility study that would span 96 weeks (nearly 2 years) of community engagement, which includes: gathering community input, multiple site surveys, traffic analysis, environmental analysis, and other studies.

Key stakeholders have already pledged their support, with letters from: Caltrans, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, the City of Culver City, the Del Rey Neighborhood Council, and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).

Marina Central Park is an idea worth studying - the feasibility study may show it’s a terrible idea with little community support, or it may show that it’s a well-supported idea that should come to life.

Either way, we can’t know the answers, or what the community thinks, without conducting a study to find out.
