Support students with disabilities at Algonquin College

Support students with disabilities at Algonquin College
The Issue
As student’s at Algonquin College, and it deeply saddens us to see the recent cuts in the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) staff.
These incredible support workers have been a lifeline for many students, including myself, who rely on their expertise and dedication to succeed in our academic journeys. The reduction in staff members is not just a cut in jobs, but a cut to our potential and success as future workers.
Algonquin College has always prided itself on inclusivity and support for all students, regardless of their abilities, right?
However, this decision contradicts that very principle. Without adequate support, students with disabilities face immense challenges in accessing education on an equal footing with their peers. The CAL staff's role goes beyond just providing academic assistance. They offer personalized support, emotional encouragement, and the necessary accommodations that level the playing field.
Statistics from the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada show that approximately ONE in TEN Canadians have a learning disability. At Algonquin, this issue is magnified due to our diverse student population, which includes a significant number of students who depend on CAL for their academic achievements. Eliminating these resources puts these students at a disadvantage, causing unnecessary stress and hindering their ability to perform to their fullest potential.
The solution? Reinstating and even expanding the CAL staff would be the best outcome. By investing in the right resources and employing a committed team of support staff, our College can still uphold its commitment to accessibility. This investment is not merely a cost but a contribution to nurturing a community where everyone can thrive. Bringing back these positions will not only enhance the learning environment but will also reaffirm Algonquin's stance as a leader in inclusive education.
We urge Algonquin College’s leaders to reconsider their decisions and take immediate action in the best interests of Every student.
Every student deserves the right to education, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that these rights are preserved and promoted. The future of many students hinges on the support provided by CAL staff.
Please add your signature to support reinstating the vital services and staff at the Centre for Accessible Learning, so that every student at Algonquin College has the chance to succeed.
