Support Students and Help Them Grow
The Issue
The mission is to help strengthen school support systems for students/teachers, cultivating holistic growth both in and out of the classroom. The focus is making positive changes in mental health and school engagement. The core principles are:
- To enable all students to engage with learning without excessive stress.
A school environment that increases unnecessary stressors that can hinder learning and overall well-being. Promoting a balanced approach to academics will help develop a growth mindset that values effort and creativity over just getting the assignment done (removing the stressors). It will equip students with effective coping methods and stress management techniques. Balancing practices that support student well-being with academic rigor/fulfilling and engaging learning is important. This includes open communication about stress and providing resources to address it proactively.
- Access to essential resources, mental support or a physical item (ex. books, pencils, computers)
Schools should be able to accommodate for students who need items such as a computer (ex. a school Chromebook or tablet), a book/library (for personal enjoyment or assignments) or even just a sharpened pencil. These benefits will help all students and families who are unable to obtain items that are needed for effective learning in school. Additionally, this includes advocating for readily available mental health support services, such as school counselors, psychologists, and peer support programs. Recognizing that navigating the complexities of student life (in and outside of school) requires emotional understanding, meaning that giving students these resource can improve mental well-being. Although schools cannot fully change the life of a student outside of school, they can help students reduce stress and guide them to strategies that can help.
- A school community where every individual is treated with respect.
School communities should be built on mutual respect, empathy, and inclusivity. Actively promoting a place where diversity is celebrated, all voices are heard and valued, and discrimination and harassment is not tolerated will help build positive relationships between students, teachers, and administrators, encouraging open dialogue and understanding. By promoting social-emotional learning, conflict resolution skills, and a sense of belonging for every individual, we can create environments where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique talents and perspectives.
Alongside this, we want to spread awareness and help reduce the rapidly increasing amount of NSSI (Non-Suicidal Self Injury) and suicide rates. School should be a safe space for all and a place to get resources, no matter race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and other important aspects of identity.
