Massive industrial solar installations can wield unacceptable negative impacts on wildlife and ecosystems. They frequently require additional infrastructure such as long-distance transmission lines. Because rooftop solar occurs in areas that are already developed, it avoids these pitfalls as a totally green, animal-friendly solution.

Rooftop solar energy production is capable of producing 20 percent of the United States' electricity needs. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has introduced a bill that would greatly aid in the expansion of rooftop solar energy programs. 10 Million Solar Roofs and 10 Million Gallons of Solar Water Heating Act of 2010 would help fund the installation of solar panels for 10 million U.S. homes and businesses along with 200,000 solar water heaters. This would produce about 30,000 new megawatts of energy.
