The issue

Small businesses are the backbone of the Australian economy and a defining part of who we are. From family-run trucking operations to local trades and services, they keep our communities running and our supply chains moving.

Right now, they are under unsustainable pressure.

Rising fuel costs, increasing compliance obligations, and extended payment terms are pushing small operators to breaking point. Many are being forced to carry the financial burden for larger companies, waiting more than 60 days to be paid, while covering wages, fuel, and expenses upfront.

This is not sustainable.

Without urgent action, many small businesses will not survive the coming months. When they go, we don't just lose businesses, we lose jobs, apprenticeships, and the strength of our local communities.

We are calling for immediate, practical action:

  • Enforce maximum 14–30 day payment terms for small businesses
  • Ensure real consequences for late payments so small businesses are protected
  • Introduce real-time fuel relief, not delayed offsets
  • Provide tax relief, including flexible payment plans and removal of prepaid tax instalments

Small transport businesses keep Australia moving, yet they are being left to carry the risk. Mum-and-dad operators deserve fair conditions to survive and succeed.

Do you remember what you were doing on Monday Feb 2nd? I do, we were working on a job on a new housing estate. We paid for the fuel in the trucks, had paid the rego, the insurances, the maintenance, tyres etc. the drivers worked, we’ve paid their wages, their PAYG tax is due in 6 days and super due before the end of the month yet we have not yet received payment for this work. In the meantime, fuel prices continue to go up with no real relief for small businesses. The tax man continues to hold his hand out and his whip in the other, raised and ready in case you are one day late on your repayments. And our turkey of a prime minister decides to spend $20 million on an advertising campaign urging Aussies to remove their roof racks in an attempt to reduce fuel consumption. Thanks for nothing mate!

If you think something needs to change, pls sign the petition.
