The Issue

I've poured my heart and soul into building my salon over the last two years. Through relentless marketing, advertising, and hosting engaging community events, I've established a warm and welcoming space for all our clients. Our salon has become a cherished part of the neighborhood, offering personalized barber services that have cultivated a loyal customer base.

However, a barbershop is now planning to open right next door. This isn't just a competitive challenge; it threatens the livelihood of an already established small business—our salon. With a unique focus on men's haircuts, introducing a competitor so close poses a significant risk to what we've achieved and threatens to diminish the sense of community we've worked hard to build.

Economic hardship and fluctuating markets are real, especially for small businesses. Competition is healthy when it bolsters innovation and consumer choice. However, unsustainable saturation in a close-knit market can lead to the financial strain of all involved, not just one party. Our business isn't just work—it's a passion and a vital part of the community that both supports and is supported by us.

Instead of undercutting our efforts, let us work together to establish balanced growth that considers the needs of everyone involved. We urge local zoning and business registration authorities to reassess this allocation decision and consider the impact it will have on existing businesses. There are viable alternatives that would support both thriving entrepreneurship and a diverse range of services without clustering similar offerings in an underserved area.

Please support us in ensuring our salon continues to thrive and serve the community by signing this petition. Together, we can promote a balanced and fair environment where every business has the chance to succeed.

Thank you for your investment in our community. As a small business owner myself, I understand the hard work and sacrifice you put in day to day. I agree that opening a similar business immediately next to your salon is not ideal. Except for marijuana dispensaries and body art establishments, the City does not have laws or regulations that prohibit similar businesses from being in close proximity to one another. Our City is currently working on a comprehensive update to its Zoning Code. As those conversations develop, I will keep your concerns in mind and ask the planning professionals to analyze the costs and benefits of implementing the type of regulation you are requesting.
