The Issue

We call on the government to take urgent action to support small businesses and reduce the growing financial pressures they face. Small businesses are essential to our economy, our high streets, and our local communities, yet many are now struggling to survive under the weight of rising costs and high taxes.

Small businesses create jobs, drive innovation, and bring life and character to the neighbourhoods in which they operate. They include cafés, hair salons, restaurants, retail shops, yoga studios, boxing clubs, martial arts schools, language schools, workshops, independent pubs, and many other independent enterprises. These businesses know their customers, support their neighbours, and help build a stronger sense of family, connection, and community. They are not only places of trade but also places where relationships are built and local identity is strengthened.

Many small businesses are now under serious pressure. Rising running costs, heavier tax burdens, and wider economic challenges are making it harder for them to stay afloat, invest, hire staff, and plan ahead. Although recent changes to business rates show that reliefs and transitional support are available, many small firms—especially in retail, hospitality, and leisure—still face higher costs and ongoing uncertainty. Without stronger, more targeted action, more businesses will close, more jobs will be lost, and local communities will suffer.

By implementing supportive policies, the government can help stabilise these businesses, ensuring that they continue to enrich our communities and contribute to our economy.

We therefore call for

·       A significant reduction in business rates for small businesses.

·       An increase in reliefs and grants, especially for businesses affected by economic challenges.

·       A review of current policies to ensure small businesses are treated fairly.

·       A stronger, ongoing consultation with small business owners and representative organisations so that their voices are properly heard in policymaking.

Action is needed now to prevent further closures, protect jobs, sustain local economies, and secure a stronger and more sustainable future for small businesses. By backing small businesses, we are backing the communities they serve and the people whose livelihoods depend on them.

This is not just about saving individual businesses; it’s about preserving the very fabric of Scottish society. Each business closure represents a loss to the community - not just economically but emotionally and socially.

We urge everyone who values our local communities and the unique character that small businesses bring to act now. Sign this petition to demand that the Scottish government prioritise support for small businesses.
