In 2013, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution proclaiming that food is ”a basic human right and essential for human health,” setting a goal for a hunger-free San Francisco by 2020. We are three years past this goal, but the demand for food has only grown.  Before the pandemic, 1 in 4 San Franciscans were reported as food insecure. Since the pandemic, food support signups have increased drastically with a 40% increase in CalFresh programs, 41% in WIC programs and 1 in 8 residents accessing community food programs. Meanwhile, CalFresh has cut its program significantly, inflation continues to increase food costs, and climate change has affected our local food chain negatively. We urge you to support our community based programs that nourish our residents in a culturally significant and dignified way, because:

Now is not the time to scale back on vital food support for our community.

Everyone needs to eat.

Food is a basic human right.

Sign this petition to urge the Mayor and Board of Supervisors to: 

1. Continue full funding and account for inflation at a budget baselined at no less than $40 million; 
2. Recognize and center the importance of food justice by making food funding available in multi-year requests for proposals (RFPs); and
3. Direct City departments to better coordinate their food security efforts and expand the allowance of food security funding in every grant-making department budget.
