Support safe bike and pedestrian access across the Henley Street Bridge!

The Issue

Given the indefinite closure of the Gay Street Bridge, cyclists and pedestrians are faced with major challenges to safe and comfortable mobility and connectivity in Knoxville. James White Parkway is legally a controlled-access highway, meaning cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed to use that facility to cross the river. This leaves the Henley Street Bridge as the only alternative for cyclists and pedestrians. However, given fast speeds and high motor vehicle traffic on the Henley Street Bridge, the current unprotected bike lane is dangerous, and the sidewalk is uncomfortable.
The Urban Wilderness and the South Knoxville Waterfront are significant and growing amenities for both tourists and locals. The ability to safely and conveniently travel on foot, by bike, or on a dockless scooter between downtown and South Knoxville is part of what makes visiting and recreating in our city unique and fun.
Making improvements to the Henley Street Bridge, even temporarily, would help keep cyclists and pedestrians safe and preserve connectivity across the river. Improvements could include adding width and vertical protection to the bike lane, providing more space and a safer facility for cyclists as well as creating a more comfortable environment for pedestrians.
Our number one priority is safe mobility for all. Knoxville has set the goal of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040 with Vision Zero. Improvements must be made immediately to the Henley Street Bridge to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe, especially given the current closure of the Gay Street Bridge.
