Support Resident Opposition to the Montante Solar Project
The Issue
In Webster, we face a pressing problem that threatens our environment and community well-being. The recent decision by the Town Board to approve the Montante Solar Project is not in the best interest of our residents or our ecosystem. This decision permits the installation of solar panel arrays alarmingly close to residential neighborhoods, on pre-existing woodlots, and adjacent to toxic waste. It poses significant risks to our natural habitat, property values, and the quality of life for many Webster families.
Firstly, solar projects can have numerous environmental impacts if not correctly sited. Placing solar arrays less than 1000 feet away from homes could disrupt local ecosystems, harm wildlife, and increase noise pollution. The encroachment on pre-existing woodlots further deteriorates our community's green spaces, which are crucial for biodiversity and serve as natural buffers between industrial projects and residential neighborhoods. Finally, the worrying DEC policy which allows placement of panels on toxic waste dumps should be countered by an update in Webster's solar code.
In other communities, it has been observed that proximity to solar projects can lower property values. Families who have invested in their homes might see their property devalue, leading to financial instability for some and making it harder for others to sell their homes in the future. It's vital that the Town's development plans consider these potential repercussions on its residents.
Therefore, we call upon the Town Board to realize the mistake they made in approving the Montante Solar Project. Residents are raising legal challenges against this decision, yet the Board's 3 to 2 majority of support for the project remains. It's imperative that the 3 members still in favor reconsider their support of this project and genuinely listen to the voices of their community.
Furthermore, we propose essential modifications to the Solar Code to prevent similar issues in the future. The code should explicitly prevent the installation of solar projects within 1000 feet of residential neighborhoods and prohibit their placement on existing woodlots. By enforcing these regulations, Webster can responsibly harness solar energy without compromising community and environmental integrity.
By signing this petition, you are expressing support for the residents in their ongoing fight to overturn the Town's irresponsible decision. You are letting the Town Board know that it has failed to protect our environment and uphold the interests of the Webster community by approving the Montante Solar Project, and asking them to revise their Solar Code so that it does not permit projects like this one in the future: near residential neighborhoods, on woodlots and adjacent to toxic waste.
Solar companies like Montante should not be able to profit off the destruction of Webster's green spaces in the future. Let's stand together to ensure that here in Webster, renewable energy solutions are not placed before community values and environmental stewardship. Sign this petition and make your voice heard.
