Support Recognition of Somaliland as a Sovereign State! Somaliland is not part of Somalia!
The Issue
We Support the Recognition of Somaliland as a Sovereign State! Somaliland is not a part of Somalia!
text
The international community—especially the United States and its democratic allies—faces a historic opportunity: to support peace, democracy, and regional stability in the Horn of Africa by recognizing the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign state.
Why Recognition Now Matters
The Republic of Somaliland is loyal to the United States of America and its allies, while Somalia, which claims that Somaliland is part of Somalia, has aligned itself with authoritarian powers like China.
Somaliland’s Port of Berbera and its adjacent airbase—strategically located along one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes—can provide the West with a critical base of operations in the region.
Why Somaliland is a sovereign state
Somaliland is a country in the Horn of Africa with five million inhabitants. In 1991, the region declared its independence from Somalia.
Since then, Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent state with its own currency, army, and a comparatively stable and democratically legitimate government.
History of Somaliland
In the early modern period, the Isaaq Sultanate was established in Somaliland in the middle of the 18th century.
The Sultanate had a robust economy, and trade was significant at the main port of Berbera in Somaliland.
In 1884, Somaliland became a British protectorate named British Somaliland.
Somalia, on the other hand, became an Italian protectorate in 1889, named Italian Somaliland.
On June 26 1960, the British Somaliland protectorate gained independence as the State of Somaliland, five days before Somalia got its freedom.
Somalia gained its freedom from Italian administration on July 1, 1960.
However, Somaliland then made the mistake of voluntarily merging with Somalia on July 1, 1960.
As we now know, Somalia is a failed state, and in 1991, Somaliland decided to end its merger with Somalia, and it had the right to do so.
It can therefore be stated:
Before Somaliland became a British protectorate, it was an independent state and not part of Somalia.
During its time as a British protectorate, Somaliland was not part of Somalia.
The protectorate over Somaliland ended earlier than the Italian protectorate over Somalia, so even during this period, Somaliland was never part of Somalia.
But then, Somaliland made the mistake of voluntarily uniting with Somalia. And since this happened voluntarily, Somaliland must also have the right to end its merger without the consent of Somalia or other states and to become a sovereign state, which should be recognized by other states.

The Consequences of Non-Recognition
The lack of official recognition has placed heavy economic burdens on Somaliland. It lacks access to the international banking system, making credit card transactions impossible. Furthermore, institutions like the World Bank and the IMF cannot provide funding without state recognition.
But Somaliland is not asking for handouts—it is asking for recognition.
National pride runs deep in Somaliland. The country’s red, white, and green flag is seen everywhere—from rearview mirrors to painted facades. This is a nation that has built itself. All it seeks now is acknowledgement.
Act Now
We urge the United States, the European Union, and other democratic governments to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland. This act would strengthen global democracy, reinforce Western influence in the Horn of Africa, and reward a region that has embraced peace and progress.
