The Issue
As concerned citizens of Alaska, we must address a critical issue that affects the safety and well-being of our youth: the age of consent. Currently set at 16, this law leaves vulnerable minors at risk of exploitation by adults who may wield significant power over them. It is imperative that we raise the age of consent to 18 to better protect our young people from potential abuse and manipulation.
Consider the scenarios where power dynamics can be dangerously skewed. A substitute teacher, for example, holds a position of authority in the classroom and has the ability to influence and control students. Similarly, a supervisor in a workplace can exert pressure on a young employee, creating an environment where consent may not be freely given. In these situations, the inherent power imbalance can lead to exploitation, as minors may feel compelled to comply with the advances of an adult simply because of their position.
Moreover, some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the potential consequences for adults who engage in sexual relationships with minors, fearing that they may face permanent criminal records or be placed on the sex offender registry. While we understand the importance of protecting individuals from unjust penalties, it is crucial to recognize that the primary focus should be on the safety and well-being of minors. These young individuals are not yet able to vote, make independent decisions, or fully comprehend the complexities of adult relationships. Their vulnerability must be our priority.
By raising the age of consent to 18 and establishing a more reasonable "close in age" exception, we can create a legal framework that prioritizes the protection of our youth. It is time to shift our focus from protecting adults to safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our society. Together, we can advocate for a change that ensures the safety and well-being of Alaska's youth, allowing them to grow and thrive in a secure environment.
Dear Alaska Legislators,
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our strong support for the proposed changes to House Bill 101, which aims to raise the age of consent from 16 to 18 years old. This change is crucial for the protection of our youth and reflects our commitment to their safety and well-being.
Raising the age of consent is a vital step in safeguarding young individuals from potential exploitation and abuse. At the ages of 16 and 17, many teenagers are still developing their identities and understanding what constitutes a healthy relationship. By increasing the age of consent to 18, we can create a stronger legal framework that prioritizes the protection of our youth.
Additionally, we urge you to consider a "close in age" exception of two years for 16 and 17-year-olds, rather than the supported six-year difference. A six-year gap can create significant power imbalances, leading to potential manipulation and exploitation. At such formative stages in life, it is essential to protect young people from relationships that could be harmful or coercive.
Predators often exploit existing laws to their advantage, targeting younger individuals who may lack the maturity or experience to navigate complex relationships. Our focus should be on protecting our youth, rather than providing legal loopholes that benefit adults.
We call on you to support House Bill 101 and ensure that our laws reflect a commitment to the safety and well-being of Alaska's youth. Together, we can create a safer environment for all.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
