Support Queens as a site for NYC's new Applied Science & Engineering Campus
The Issue
Please sign our petition to City Hall to consider Queens as the site for New York's proposed new applied science and engineering research campus and the future Silicon Valley. This once in a lifetime opportunity to improve education, create well-paid jobs and new industries that would realize the potential of Queens and New York.
Background
In Dec 2010, Mayor Bloomberg announced an initiative to build a new applied science and engineering school in New York. In March 2011, 26 academic institutions including Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Columbia, India Institute of Technology, submitted 18 Expressions of Interest to build a new campus and create a new entrepreneurial community silmilar to Silicon Valley. Unfortunately, Queens was not offered as a potential campus site even though it is uniquely and ideally positioned within NYC to host this new campus and to foster the next Silicon Valley. This summer, City Hall will ask for refined Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from the consortiums and Queens should be offered as a site for consideration.
The Case for Queens
(1) Fertile Community and Culture. Most great universities aren't able to foster the collaborate entrepreneurial environment of Silicon Valley and the difference is the community and culture. Queens and the Greater Flushing region is particularly well suited for fostering Silicon Valley 2.0 because of the emphasis on education and active immigrant entrepreneurial culture in the community.
(2) Ripe for Development. The Greater Flushing region has 62 acres zoned for development at Willets Point as well as other large tracks of land available for development along the Flushing Waterfront and in College Point. If the goal of the Mayor's initiative is to foster large scale industrial growth and development, the land available potential for development is essential to the growth of Silicon Valley 2.0.
(3) Established Transporation Hub. The Greater Flushing region has the largest transportation hub outside of Times Square. It's only 19 minutes to Penn Station by the Long Island Rail Road which is quicker than any other site under consideration. The #7 subway line is also 22 minutes away from Penn Station by express train. There are also 19 MTA bus lines, access to 4 major highways (GCP, LIE, Whitestone Expwy and Van Wyck), minutes away to the major airports of LGA and JFK.
(4) Housing and Workspace. There are many ongoing and planned residential and commercial developments in Willets Point and the Great Flushing Area that provides abundant space for a university and new Silicon Valley. Recently completed Queens Crossing offers 110,000 SF of commerical space and 144,000 SF of office space. Sky View Parc is a $1 Billion mixed use space with 1,100 residential units. Flushing Commons is a $850 million development project by F&T group and Rockefeller Development Group that will create 185,000 SF of office space, 600 residential units, and 235,000 SF of retail space. Willets Point Phase 1 will provide up to 400 mixed-income residential units, 680,000 SF of retail space, and 387 hotel rooms with sustainable LEED certified design. Affordability and availability of space is essential for cost-conscious entrepreneurs.
(5) Queens Lifestyle: Queens possesses both high density and suburban lifestyles yet it's part of the greatly city in the world. Family-friendly suburban communities will attract and retain entreprenuers and their families. The abundant recreational space and cultural attractions are also important to attract health-conscious tech-oriented entrepreneurs. Flushing-Corona Park is 1,200 acres and 1.5x larger than Central Park and the developing Flushing Waterfront all make it an attractive place to live and work.
