The Issue
In a heart-wrenching ordeal, my husband Curtis Green has been incarcerated for 23 years for a crime that he did not commit. Our story is not unique. In Atlanta, GA, and throughout Georgia, many families suffer the unbearable pain of having a loved one wrongfully convicted, largely due to flaws in the legal system.
Post-conviction freedom is a crucial issue for countless individuals whose lives hang in the balance of outdated and unfair judicial processes. The current legal framework often fails to provide adequate opportunities for reconsideration of evidence or appeals, leaving innocent people languishing in prison for decades. Nationally, over 3,000 cases have been overturned due to wrongful convictions, showing a glaring need for systemic reform ([National Registry of Exonerations](https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/about.aspx
In Georgia, this need is pressing. Georgia's post-conviction relief methods must evolve to prevent further injustices. The state should ensure timely and comprehensive reviews of new evidence, prioritize cases with credible claims of innocence, and make the appeals process more accessible, especially for those lacking resources.
We call upon the Georgia General Assembly and the Governor to enact legislation that strengthens post-conviction relief. This legislation should include improved access to DNA testing, allowance for the introduction of new evidence beyond current statutory limits, and the establishment of an independent review board for wrongful convictions. These actions can restore trust in the judicial system and bring hope to families like mine.
Please sign this petition to urge our lawmakers to take immediate action. Help us change the lives of those wrongfully convicted in Georgia, ensuring that justice is not an elusive ideal but a reality for everyone. Stand with us in advocating for a fair and just legal system. Your signature can make a difference in this vital cause.
