The Issue

Over the past several years, Virginia's uncontrolled development has led to an increased strain on our schools, roads, and emergency services.

As our communities continue to grow, it is crucial we ensure that our public infrastructure can adequately support this growth. Unfortunately, current zoning laws do not allow localities to deny new developments due to a lack of infrastructure. This gap has resulted in overcrowded schools, congested roads, and stretched emergency services, diminishing the quality of life for many Virginians.  As Virginia becomes the Data Center capitol of the world, local leaders must be able to make zoning decisions in the best interest of their residents.

Virginia SB 781 aims to address this issue by empowering localities to take the adequacy of public facilities into account when making zoning decisions. This bill allows community planners to manage growth more effectively and ensures that new developments are sustainable and beneficial to all residents. By considering the adequacy of public amenities, local leaders can make informed decisions that protect and enhance the welfare of their constituents.

Overcrowded schools hinder educational opportunities, congested roads increase commute times and pollution, and overextended emergency services can delay critical response times. With the influx of Data Centers, it is more important than ever that localities have the tools to protect the water and energy supply of their citizens.  By supporting SB 781, we can reduce the likelihood of these issues becoming even more pronounced as our population grows.

We urge the Virginia General Assembly to prioritize the passage of SB 781 to ensure that local governments have the necessary tools to protect their communities and resources effectively. Let's support this critical initiative by signing this petition to show your commitment to sustainable growth and a brighter future for Virginia.
