Support pain patients in accessing compassionate care
The issue
I’ve been living in hell for over a decade. My life is being consumed by an unending cycle of pain and suffering, and I’ve been made to feel as though I am to blame for my condition. When I sought help at a hospital, I was treated with disdain, handed my discharge papers, and told to leave. This dehumanizing treatment is not just affecting me; it's destroying my family who are helplessly watching me spiral downward, to the point where life feels like an unbearable burden.
Though I do receive pain medication, the struggle to keep them gets harder. The barriers to accessing compassionate care are often based on misconceptions about pain patients, leading to belittlement, humiliation, and ignorance even when we're already at rock bottom. Pain patients deserve dignity and respect, not the retraumatizing experience that makes one question the value of seeking help.
Chronic pain affects millions of people around the world, yet those living with it are frequently stigmatized and left to fend for themselves in a system that is failing them. According to a CDC report, approximately 20.4% of adults in the United States experience chronic pain, affecting their ability to carry out daily activities and diminishing their quality of life. The Institute of Medicine also highlights that pain costs the nation up to $635 billion annually, yet the support systems for those suffering remain inadequate and poorly understood.
We need change now. Not only for myself but for the countless others who live in silent agony under a system that doesn’t recognize our need for humane treatment. We need policies that support better access to pain management options and end the stigma against those who seek legitimate help. This includes training for hospital staff in compassionate care and patient rights, and more research funding aimed at understanding chronic pain and developing better treatments.
Help us to raise our voices and demand that pain patients receive the care and support they deserve. Sign this petition to urge healthcare policy-makers and medical institutions to prioritize the rights and needs of chronic pain patients. Together, we can push for a system that recognizes and values the dignity of each individual in pain. Sign now to support this critical movement.
